Used 7-seater cars: the best 7-seat SUVs, MPVs and estates, prices in Portugal and what to check before buying
Before you close the dealCheck the vehicle history by its chassis number, confirm ISV and IUC in the calculators, and compare the asking price with the live adverts for the same model.

A used 7-seater car in Portugal now costs around €17,500 in the middle of the market, but there is choice below €10,000. The most advertised models are the Peugeot 5008, the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso, the Renault Grand Scénic and the Ford S-Max. Before buying, check the seating capacity on the car's papers, its motorway toll class and where the child seats will go.

This guide brings together the figures from 286 adverts for 7-seat cars on AUTO.MOTO.pt, with real prices and years, and the rules that matter in the daily life of a family in Portugal: tolls, driving licence, carrying children and taxes.

Used 7-seater cars: what they cost in 2026

We counted the active adverts for passenger cars with exactly 7 seats on 5 October 2026. These are advert counts, not sales, and the price is the seller's asking price:

  • 286 seven-seater cars for sale, with a median price of €17,475 and a median year of 2017;
  • 191 cost up to €20,000, with a median price of €13,500;
  • 57 cost up to €10,000, most of them (47) from 2006 to 2015;
  • roughly three in four run on diesel (221 of 286);
  • there are also 52 cars and vans with 8 or 9 seats.

By body type, the picture changes a lot:

  • MPVs: 146 adverts, median price €13,970;
  • SUVs: 100 adverts, median price €22,500;
  • Estates with a sixth and seventh seat in the boot: 26 adverts, median price €11,350.

In other words, the same space usually costs less in an MPV than in an SUV. The difference pays mostly for fashion and ground clearance, not for more seats.

  • SEAT Alhambra: 6 adverts, €11,500, 2011;
  • Skoda Kodiaq: 5 adverts, €28,750, 2021.

To see every model within the same budget, start with the used cars between €10,000 and €20,000, where most family 7-seaters sit.

7-seater SUVs

The 7-seat SUV is among the most sought-after, but also the most expensive: €22,500 in the middle of the range on our site.

The Peugeot 5008 leads by a wide margin. The second generation (2017–2023) went from MPV to SUV; in it, the two third-row seats can be removed to gain boot space. See the used Peugeot 5008 for sale and compare years and mileage.

Above €20,000 come the Skoda Kodiaq, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and the Kia Sorento. At the top, the Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5. In almost all of them the third row is optional: many cars of the same model have only 5 seats. The full list is under used SUVs.

7-seater MPVs: more space for less money

For a family that really needs seven seats every day, the MPV is still the most rational choice. It has a flat floor, wide doors and individual seats in the second row, which in several models makes three child seats side by side easier.

  • Citroën C4 Grand Picasso / Grand C4 SpaceTourer: the same car, renamed in 2018. One of the cheapest: a €10,350 median for the Grand Picasso;
  • Renault Grand Scénic: the long version of the Scénic, with 15 adverts at €14,900;
  • Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy: large and comfortable on the motorway; the S-Max is one of the most advertised 7-seaters below €10,000;
  • Volkswagen Touran and SEAT Alhambra: the Alhambra is the twin of the Volkswagen Sharan and one of the largest on the list; the Touran is more compact;
  • Dacia Jogger: the newest on the list, sold with 5 or 7 seats, with petrol, LPG or hybrid engines.

7-seat used MPVs make up just over half of all the 7-seaters advertised on our site.

7- and 9-seat vans

In Portugal, a "7-seat van" can mean either a passenger van or a family estate with extra seats in the boot. The 9-seaters, such as the Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer, the Renault Trafic or the Toyota Proace Verso, are another matter: they are long, use more fuel and many pay Class 2 on toll roads.

The good news: according to the IMT licence category table, a category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass with up to 8 passengers besides the driver. So a 9-seat van can be driven on a normal car licence, as long as it does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Cheap 7-seater cars: what you get up to €10,000

Below €10,000 we found 57 seven-seaters, with a median year of 2010. The most common are the Ford S-Max and the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso (8 adverts each), the first-generation Peugeot 5008 and the Renault Grand Scénic (7 each).

In this bracket the price says little: a 15-year-old car is worth what its mechanics are worth. Before paying, it makes sense to:

  • ask for the service history and the inspection records;
  • check the clutch, the gearbox and, on diesels, the particulate filter;
  • fold and unfold every seat in the second and third rows, because seized mechanisms are common and expensive;
  • make sure the third-row belts work and retract properly.

If the budget is a little wider, our guide to the best used cars under 20,000 euros helps compare them with other family cars.

Motorway tolls: Class 1 or Class 2?

It is the question every parent asks before driving down the A2 to the Algarve. Under the basic rule, Class 1 applies to vehicles less than 1.10 m high, measured vertically above the front axle. Many MPVs and SUVs are taller than that.

Decree-Law 71/2018 opened Class 1 to passenger cars between 1.10 m and 1.30 m high, but only when all of these conditions are met:

  • payment through an automatic system (Via Verde or equivalent);
  • no permanent or selectable four-wheel drive;
  • compliance with the Euro 6 standard; for vehicles with a gross weight above 2,300 kg, this requirement only applies to cars registered from 2019 onwards;
  • with a gross weight above 2,300 kg (up to 3,500 kg), at least 5 seats.

Since Decree-Law 120/2021, the electric rear axle of a hybrid does not count as four-wheel drive for this purpose. An SUV with mechanical 4x4 that is taller than 1.10 m at the front, or a car 1.30 m or taller, pays Class 2. Check the class of the specific car before you close the deal.

Children in the third row: what the law says

In Portugal, children under 12 and shorter than 135 cm travel in the back seat, in an approved child seat suited to their weight and height. The Madeira IMT summary of the Highway Code rules says that carrying a child incorrectly means a fine of €120 to €600 per child.

In a 7-seater, in practice, this means:

  • counting how many seats have ISOFIX anchors: in many models only some positions do;
  • checking that the third row has three-point belts and head restraints;
  • trying the family's child seats in the car before buying;
  • remembering that the third row of a compact SUV is mainly for children and short trips.

Before buying, try the family's child seats in the positions where they will go.

Seating capacity, IUC and ISV: the paperwork

The seating capacity is stated on the vehicle registration document (Documento Único Automóvel). If the advert says 7 seats and the document says 5, the extra seats are not legal. IUC depends on the registration year, engine size, CO₂ emissions and fuel; the IUC calculator shows the yearly amount before you close the deal.

If you are thinking of importing a used 7-seater, ISV is paid when the car is registered in Portugal. The Tax Authority lists, among the ISV benefits, passenger cars with more than 5 seats bought by large families. The conditions are set out in the ISV Code and should be confirmed with the Tax Authority before buying.

How to choose: quick checklist

  • Seven people every day: a large MPV (S-Max, Alhambra, Espace, Grand C4);
  • seven seats only at weekends: an SUV with a third row (5008, Kodiaq) or a compact MPV (Touran, Grand Scénic);
  • budget up to €10,000: S-Max and Grand Picasso, always with a service history;
  • lots of motorway driving: confirm Class 1 with Via Verde;
  • small garage: measure the space, because a 7-seater is much longer than a city car.

Frequently asked questions

Which 7-seater cars are available in Portugal?

Among used cars, the most advertised on AUTO.MOTO.pt are the Peugeot 5008, the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso, the Renault Grand Scénic, the Ford S-Max, the Dacia Jogger and the Renault Espace. There are also SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq and the Volvo XC90.

Which used 7-seater cars are cheap?

Below €10,000, the Ford S-Max (median €9,750) and the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso (€10,350) are the most common, followed by the first-generation Peugeot 5008 and the Renault Grand Scénic.

Which is the best 7-seat MPV?

It depends on the use. For seven adults on a regular basis, the large ones (S-Max, Galaxy, Alhambra, Espace) have the most usable third row. For children and occasional use, a Touran or a Grand Scénic is enough and costs less.

Which are the best 7-seat SUVs?

The Peugeot 5008 is the most advertised; on the second generation (2017–2023) the third-row seats are removable. The Skoda Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace cost more, and the Volvo XC90 is the top option. In every case, make sure the car really has 7 seats.

Does a 7-seater pay Class 2 on toll roads?

Not always. Between 1.10 m and 1.30 m high at the front axle, with Via Verde, without mechanical four-wheel drive and meeting the Euro 6 standard (with an exception for some heavier cars registered before 2019), many pay Class 1.

Can I drive a 9-seater with a category B licence?

Yes, as long as it carries no more than 8 passengers besides the driver and does not exceed 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass.
