The size

Where do I find the tyre size?

On the sidewall of any tyre, in raised letters. It is also in the registration certificate, the owner’s manual and, on most models, on a sticker in the driver’s door or the fuel flap, next to the recommended pressures.

On a 205/55 R16 91V tyre, each part means:

205
Width — tyre width in millimetres.
55
Profile — sidewall height as a % of the width: 55% of 205 mm ≈ 113 mm.
R
Construction — radial — practically every passenger-car tyre.
16
Rim — rim diameter in inches.
91
Load index — maximum load per tyre: 91 = 615 kg.
V
Speed rating — maximum speed: V = 240 km/h (T = 190, H = 210, W = 270).

Load index and speed rating

New tyres should carry equal or higher ratings than the registration certificate states. A lower rating than approved can fail the inspection and give the insurer an argument after a claim.

How old is the tyre

The DOT code ends in four digits: week and year of manufacture. 2324 means week 23 of 2024.

A motorcycle tyre size reads the same way — 120/70 R17 at the front, 180/55 R17 at the rear of a naked or sports bike. Pick the size and compare prices.

Season

Summer, winter or all-season tyres?

  • Summer tyres

The choice for most of the country: better braking on dry and wet roads above 7 °C, less wear and lower consumption.

    See summer tyres
  • Winter tyres

Soft compound and sipes for cold, snow and ice. Not generally mandatory in Portugal, but they make a difference in the mountains and on trips to the snow.

    See winter tyres
  • All-season tyres

One set for the whole year: a good compromise for low-mileage drivers who want to skip the seasonal swap.

Tyres: frequently asked questions

Where to buy cheap tyres online?

Pick the size or your car above and sort the list by «Cheapest first». We compare the tyres of our partner shop pneus.com.pt, with prices updated once a day; you buy at the shop, through the «See at pneus.com.pt» button of each tyre.

How much does a tyre cost?

It depends mostly on the size, the brand and the season. Each size page shows how many tyres there are and the lowest price of the day, and the list sorts by price. When comparing with a garage price, allow for fitting and balancing as well.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Portugal?

There is no general requirement. On snowy mountain roads, such as in Serra da Estrela, road signs may make snow chains compulsory. If you drive in the mountains in winter or travel to the snow, winter or all-season tyres make a difference.

Are all-season tyres worth it?

If you drive few kilometres or live where winters are mild, yes: one set lasts the whole year and saves the seasonal swap. In strong summer heat or in snow, a summer or winter tyre brakes better in the conditions it was made for.

What is a run-flat tyre?

A tyre with a reinforced sidewall that keeps going after a puncture, without pressure, for the distance and at the speed the maker states. Fit it on cars that come with it and do not mix it with conventional tyres. On each size page, the «Run-flat only» filter shows just these.

What are the load index and the speed rating?

The number and the letter after the size, like 91V in 205/55 R16 91V: 91 is the maximum load per tyre (615 kg) and V the maximum speed (240 km/h). New tyres must have ratings equal to or higher than those in the registration document.

When should tyres be replaced?

When the tread reaches the legal minimum of 1.6 mm (the wear indicators at the bottom of the grooves are level with the tread), when there are cuts, bulges or uneven wear, or when the tyre is old: the DOT code gives the week and year it was made. Replace them in pairs, on the same axle.

Save

How to save on tyres

  • Compare by the exact size and the ratings in the registration certificate — the only fair way to compare prices across brands.
  • Replace tyres in pairs, on the same axle: same size, brand and model on each side.
  • Count fitting and balancing when comparing the online price with the garage’s.
  • The legal minimum tread is 1.6 mm; below 3 mm wet braking is already noticeably worse.
