Where do I find the tyre size?
On the sidewall of any tyre, in raised letters. It is also in the registration certificate, the owner’s manual and, on most models, on a sticker in the driver’s door or the fuel flap, next to the recommended pressures.
On a 205/55 R16 91V tyre, each part means:
- 205
- Width — tyre width in millimetres.
- 55
- Profile — sidewall height as a % of the width: 55% of 205 mm ≈ 113 mm.
- R
- Construction — radial — practically every passenger-car tyre.
- 16
- Rim — rim diameter in inches.
- 91
- Load index — maximum load per tyre: 91 = 615 kg.
- V
- Speed rating — maximum speed: V = 240 km/h (T = 190, H = 210, W = 270).
Load index and speed rating
New tyres should carry equal or higher ratings than the registration certificate states. A lower rating than approved can fail the inspection and give the insurer an argument after a claim.
How old is the tyre
The DOT code ends in four digits: week and year of manufacture. 2324 means week 23 of 2024.

Motorcycle tyres by size
A motorcycle tyre size reads the same way — 120/70 R17 at the front, 180/55 R17 at the rear of a naked or sports bike. Pick the size and compare prices.
Summer, winter or all-season tyres?
Summer tyres
The choice for most of the country: better braking on dry and wet roads above 7 °C, less wear and lower consumption.
See summer tyresWinter tyres
Soft compound and sipes for cold, snow and ice. Not generally mandatory in Portugal, but they make a difference in the mountains and on trips to the snow.
See winter tyresAll-season tyres
One set for the whole year: a good compromise for low-mileage drivers who want to skip the seasonal swap.

How to save on tyres
- Compare by the exact size and the ratings in the registration certificate — the only fair way to compare prices across brands.
- Replace tyres in pairs, on the same axle: same size, brand and model on each side.
- Count fitting and balancing when comparing the online price with the garage’s.
- The legal minimum tread is 1.6 mm; below 3 mm wet braking is already noticeably worse.
