Find out which motorcycles you can ride with a car license (category B) in Portugal, and when you need an A1 or A2 motorcycle license.

Many drivers wonder: can I ride a motorcycle with my car license in Portugal?

The answer is yes — but under specific conditions defined by Portuguese traffic law and the IMT.

1. Legal conditions

If you hold a category B driver’s license, you may ride certain motorcycles, provided that:

  1. You are 25 years or older;
  2. You have held the B license for at least 2 years.

This allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW (15 hp) of maximum power.

Examples:

👉 You can ride a Honda PCX 125, Yamaha NMAX 125, or Vespa Primavera 125 without needing a motorcycle license.

2. Mandatory training

You must complete a 7-hour training course at a driving school.

This course includes theoretical and practical lessons — no exam required.

After completion, you receive a certificate that allows you to legally ride 125 cc motorcycles.

3. What you can ride

With a car license + training, you can ride:

  • Motorcycles up to 125 cc
  • Power up to 11 kW (15 hp)
  • Power-to-weight ratio under 0.1 kW/kg

These are mostly light scooters and commuter bikes.

4. When you need A1, A2, or A

  • A1 license: up to 125 cc (from age 16).
  • A2 license: up to 35 kW (from age 18).
  • A license: unlimited power (from age 24).

5. Advantages of 125 cc motorcycles

  • Perfect for city commuting.
  • Fuel-efficient — most do over 40 km/l.
  • Low insurance and maintenance costs.
