The Mercedes-Benz W201 is the internal designation of the Mercedes-Benz 190 sedan series, a line of D-segment sedans with front engine, rear drive, five seats and four doors, manufactured in a single generation from 1982 to 1993, as the company’s first compact car.

Designed by Bruno Sacco, Mercedes-Benz style chief from 1975 to 1999, the W201 debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1982. Produced in Bremen and Sindelfingen, Germany, production reached 1,879,629 units over its eleven-year life span.

The W201 introduced a 5-link rear suspension, later used in the E and C classes, front and rear anti-roll bars, anti-dive and anti-squat geometry, as well as airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretensioners. Extensive use of lightweight high-strength steel allowed it to withstand a collision with a concrete barrier at 56 km/h without serious passenger injuries or cabin deformation.
